Achille Compagnoni
Achille Compagnoni (1914–2009) was one of Italy's greatest mountaineers. Born in Santa Caterina di Valfurva in the Aosta Valley, he devoted his life to the mountains — as an alpine guide, ski instructor, and competitor in the Mezzalama and World Championship ski-mountaineering events.
On 31 July 1954, together with Lino Lacedelli, he became the first person to reach the summit of K2 (8,611 m), the world's second-highest and one of its most formidable peaks. The achievement secured his place among the legends of world mountaineering.
Achille was also a man of many talents beyond the peaks: he appeared in two of Italy's finest films, Mario Monicelli's La Grande Guerra (1959) and Luigi Comencini's Tutti a casa (1960), alongside Vittorio Gassman and Alberto Sordi.
A hotel born in 1948
In 1948, Achille Compagnoni laid the first stone for Hotel da Compagnoni in the pedestrian centre of Breuil-Cervinia, at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn. It was his vision of alpine hospitality: a warm, welcoming home for skiers and mountaineers in Italy's highest ski resort.
Over the decades, the hotel has been thoroughly renovated while preserving its authentic Valdostan character — alpine wood, traditional fabrics, and the mountaineering memorabilia that fill our corridors and common rooms, telling the story of a life spent among the world's greatest peaks.
A legacy we share
Today, Hotel da Compagnoni remains a treasured symbol of Cervinia's heritage — a living museum of alpine history known across the Alps and beyond. Photographs, equipment, and mementos from historic expeditions welcome every guest who walks through our doors.
After the passing of Achille's widow Elda Mossini, the Sertorelli family — long-time friends of the Compagnoni family — took over management of the hotel. As Achille himself had wished, the hotel continues in trusted hands, combining respect for its extraordinary past with the comforts today's travellers expect.
