The man behind the name
Achille Compagnoni
Born in 1914 in Santa Caterina di Valfurva, Achille Compagnoni devoted his life to the mountains — as an alpine guide, ski instructor, and competitor in the Mezzalama and World Championship ski-mountaineering events.
Beyond the peaks, he appeared in two of Italy's finest films: Mario Monicelli's La Grande Guerra (1959) and Luigi Comencini's Tutti a casa (1960), alongside Vittorio Gassman and Alberto Sordi.

1948
A hotel born in the pedestrian centre
Achille lays the first stone for Hotel da Compagnoni in Breuil-Cervinia — his vision of a warm, welcoming home for skiers and mountaineers.
1954
First to the summit of K2
On 31 July, together with Lino Lacedelli, Achille becomes the first person to reach the summit of K2 (8,611m) — securing his place among the legends of world mountaineering.
1959–60
On the silver screen
Achille appears alongside Vittorio Gassman and Alberto Sordi in two of Italy's most celebrated films of the era.
2009
A legend passes, aged 94
Achille Compagnoni passes away, leaving behind a hotel and a story that still fill the corridors of Cervinia today.
A legacy we share
"As Achille himself had wished, the hotel continues in trusted hands."
After the passing of Achille's widow, Elda Mossini, the Sertorelli family — long-time friends of the Compagnoni family — took over management of the hotel. Today, the management is handled by the Marmore s.r.l. group that also runs Hotel Marmore and Hotel Breithorn in Cervinia.
